Sara Butler Zalesky
Publication date: July 4th 2016
Genres: Adult, Romance, Sports, Suspense

Known as the Ice Queen of the peloton, pro cyclist Loren Mackenzie rarely shows emotion in the heat of competition; she leads her team with quiet strength and determination. But her successes have not come without suffering, and her tragic past is hidden inside tarnished armor.

While out on a training ride with her cycling team near Enfield, England, a chance meeting quickly develops into an unexpected whirlwind romance. But a relationship with an A-list celebrity brings with it the microscope of tabloid-media attention, which expose jealousy and rivalry that threaten to undermine Loren’s leadership of her team.

The new romance also reveals a dangerous obsession, culminating in a terrifying confrontation with someone from Loren’s past. Her injuries not only put her chances at the World Championship in jeopardy but also bring forth memories of a life she had long buried – for good reason.

Can Loren open her heart to the love she has held at a distance, or will her fear ultimately defeat her?

The follow up novel in the Wheeler series is coming soon.

Author Bio:

Sara was born in the wee hours of a November night in New York City. When her family moved to a small borough in northwestern New Jersey, she had little choice but to move as well. Self-sufficiency is a tough thing for a toddler.

The dichotomy of being the middle child of three, but the only girl, was difficult, as typically no one really pays attention to a middle child. Mostly, Sara spent her time creating fanciful stories in her head when she should have been focused on other things, an issue that continues to this day.

Most of these stories have never been shared, let alone completed. This all changed in the spring of 2015, when Sara was encouraged by a friend to expand upon a short story she had accidentally emailed to him. The result is ‘Wheeler’, a romantic, women’s fiction/sport novel, which combines the author’s romantic inclinations and her passion for cycling.

Sara currently resides in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA, with her loving husband and their son. She is a paralegal for a boutique law firm in Chester County, Pa, an avid road cyclist and indoor cycling instructor at a national chain.

Excerpt from Wheeler, by Sara Butler Zalesky

3 July

Giro Rosa Prologue, 2km

Dusk had begun to lay claim to the city of Kamnik as Loren Mackenzie made her way to the stage. The starter greeted her with a nod, and a steward kept her bike upright from behind as she checked it was in the correct gear for her start, then swung her leg over the seat. Her heart hammered in her chest, in time with the pounding bass of the music blaring out of the speakers behind her. She clipped into the pedals and stood up, flexing her hands on the small outer bars of her time trial bike.

Thirty seconds.

She took several deep breaths to try and relax, but her mouth filled with saliva as a hot flash swept through her. No, not now. Don’t get sick.

Fifteen seconds.

She closed her eyes and breathed as the announcer introduced her. I am the storm. I am enough.

Pet, štiri, tri, dva, ENA! GO!” The steward released her bike.

Loren jumped away, gathering speed down the ramp to sit and bank into the tight right turn, only to surge out of the saddle to the 400-meter straightaway. There was no time to think, only react, as a yellow line on the road flashed under her, a safety warning the turnaround point was ahead. She squeezed the brakes hard and swung sharply around the median, only to pull a violent acceleration out of the turn.

Tucking back into her aero position, she tore down the 700-meter section, ignoring the burn in her legs from the heavy gear. Faster and harder she pedaled until another yellow line passed under her wheels. She clutched at the brakes again and dove into the turn, only to burst out of the saddle and hammer into the pedals. With a few revolutions of her legs, she was back in position, pushing with all her strength, her body screaming for relief. The yellow warning line appeared under her tires again.

Don’t go wide out of the turn. Don’t go wide. She grabbed at the brakes and banked aggressively into the right-hand turn that would bring her back to the start/finish line.

The carbon front wheel dipped as it hit a depression and a sharp snap echoed out across the square. Its support disintegrated and her bicycle flipped over, sending Loren head first into the tarmac. The force of the impact separated her from her bike, and she slid across the ground and into the metal barriers. Cold aluminum was poking her in the ribs as Loren opened her eyes with a groan.

What the hell? Her ears were ringing, and there was a metallic taste in her mouth. She wiped her gloved hand under her nose. I’m bleeding, then gasped. Get the fuck up! Get up! You can’t continue if you don’t get up!

She crawled out of the twisted metal barricades and struggled to stand on shaky legs as pain and dizziness narrowed her vision. Stumbling the few feet to her broken bicycle, she slung it over her uninjured shoulder to limp the few remaining yards and cross the finish line, where she collapsed to her hands and knees, trembling and spitting out blood. Strong arms gently encouraged her to sit up.

Easy now.” She looked up at him as Felix put his arm around her waist.

No, I’m fine,” she mumbled, and tried to pull away from him.

You are not fine, ma bien adoré. I will not leave your side,” he whispered as he helped her to the stretcher. Paramedics pushed him out of the way as one clamped a neck brace around her throat. His hand slipped from hers as they pushed the gurney away.

A piercing beep startled Loren to consciousness, squinting against a painfully bright light shining in her eyes. Something was shoved up her nose, but she couldn’t move her arms to relieve the pressure.

Where we goin’, mama?” she croaked and tried to turn her head. “Mama? Mama!” She strained against the straps, and more alarms sounded as her breathing and heart rate increased. “Mama! Get up! We have to run!” A cool hand touched her forehead, smoothing her hair back from her face.

You had an accident, gattina,” a woman murmured. “We are going to hospital.”

She renewed her struggle and started to cry. “No, no, don’t leave me here! Please! I’ll be good! I promise!” She froze when a man spoke to her, his hands holding her head still.

Shhhh, it will be alright, mon tresor. I will not leave you.

Loren forced her eyes open again and focused on the diffused light above her. She was in the back seat of the Volvo with the rear dome light shining in her eyes. Her head was on Aria’s lap and Felix was in the driver’s seat. Waves of nausea swept over her as the throb of her head beat in time with her heart. Her entire right side complained as she adjusted her position with a groan and a cool hand covered her forehead.

Move slowly,” Aria told her and Loren hissed through her teeth she sat up to face her friend.

Did I fall asleep?” She gasped as shadows distorted Aria’s features in the dim light of the back seat of the car.

What do you recall?”

Uh, I crashed in the prologue.” Her eyes widened. “Did I get shot?”

Felix scoffed from the front seat. “You hit a pot hole and your wheel exploded.”

Oh.” Loren put her hand to her face and felt a plastic splint across the bridge of her nose. “My nose is broken?”

It is a slight fracture,” Aria replied. “They were concerned because of how much blood you swallowed.” Loren pulled her tattered jersey farther away from her face.

That’s what’s making me feel sick. But why am I still wearing my skinsuit? ”

Felix glared over his shoulder. “Don’t even think about getting sick in the car.”

Aria gave him a look and shook her head. “You did not want to leave the hospital in only a gown. I did not have a change of clothes for you.” Loren ran her hands over her chest and down to her thighs, feeling tight Lycra covering her body. “They cut off my bras and my undershirt, but not my skinsuit?”

You would not let them.”

He was in the room?” she whispered. Aria frowned deeply and nodded. Loren crossed her arms tightly over her chest, her stomach adding to the burning of her abused skin.

Felix was in the room when they cut my clothes off. Images of a bright light and several masked faces flashed through her mind. Her eyes slid to the rear-view mirror and met Felix’s gaze. He held my hand the whole time.

There is a flight leaving Kamnik tomorrow morning,” he told her. “We’ve arranged to have a UCI doctor escort you home.”

No,” she shot back. “I’m not leaving.”

He twisted his neck to see her. “Yes, you are. You cannot continue in your condition.”

She hissed as she sat up straighter. “Yes, I can. I know the protocol. I answered all their fucking questions.” He quickly brought the car to a stop on the side of the road and turned around to glare at her.

Yes, you know the protocol. You know it well enough to supplant it.”

I have to be conscious enough to fake it!” Loren groaned and rubbed her temples with her fingertips. “That doesn’t even make sense.”

Even if you take the time trial, it won’t make any difference,” he muttered and turned back to the road.

Aria’s concern was obvious in both expression and tone. “Are you certain you should continue? It is nine days. I do not think it is wise.”

Loren closed her eyes. “I can’t let them down.”

Banging from the kitchen has me turning in the direction of the wall oven. The brunette shoves the tin of crab cakes into the center, shiny with the sauce she basted them with.

No sooner than she sets the timer and takes off her oven mitt than Kirk Watson arrives. “Hey, sweet thing. How about you fix me a plate?”

How about I punch you in the head, Kirk?

I glare in his direction. She’s the only non-Caucasian woman in the immediate vicinity. I’m not trying to be a dick and assume he’s racist, I’ve just known him long enough to know that’s what he is. Not to mention, she’s in a cocktail dress or whatever the fuck, not dressed in a black shirt and pants like the caterers Becca hired.

Her small chin juts slightly forward. “I’m sorry, sir,” she says. “I don’t work here, I was just helping someone out.”

Kirk is already drunk and way past horny. He leans his arm against the overhead counter and gives her the kind of once-over that should send her to the nearest shower to wash his filth clean. “Then how about I buy you a drink?”

“It’s my understanding the drinks are free,” she tells him.

He sidesteps in front of her when she tries to walk away, blocking her. “Come on, sweetie. I’m just trying to be nice.”

I don’t think things through. I storm in from the opposite side and from one blink to the next, I’m suddenly there.

The brunette takes a step back and into me, my presence startling her and making her jump. “Back off, Kirk. She’s with me.”

Maybe I shouldn’t have said what I did, but Kirk’s the type who doesn’t know when to quit unless there’s a bigger man there to make him.

Tonight, that bigger man is me. He swipes his shaved head, offering me a slick smile that turns challenging real quick. “Is that right?”

“Damn straight.” I think the brunette looks up at me, but I’m too busy looking at Kirk. Yeah, he’s drunk, and ready to take a swing. The protective side of me kicks in. I grasp my supposed damsel in distress by the elbow and gently guide her behind me.

His gaze trails to her briefly before returning to me. “I thought you were hard up.”

“Nah,” I say, not wanting to give this idiot any amount of satisfaction. “Onto bigger and better as you can see.”

“Or tinier and cuter?” he offers.

“Watch your mouth,” I fire back, knowing he’s not complimenting her, but rather trying to rile me. “Like I said, she’s with me.”

I clench my fists, causing my knuckles to crack. I don’t think he hears the crunch, not over the music and escalating clamor of voices. He does see me, though. Whatever he catches in my hardening features is enough to make him back down. Smart man, at least when it comes to a fight. He knows I can take a hit, and give one a hell of a lot harder.

He grunts and slinks away, like he did me a favor by letting me off and not the other way around. I keep him in my sights. By the time he reaches the door leading out to the foyer, he perks up, likely having spotted the next woman he’ll approach.

I wait until he disappears into the next room before turning back to the brunette. “Ma’am,” I say, tilting my chin.

I mean to step away and back in the direction of my beer. One drink and out, right? Sounded good in theory except the moment I shift my weight to walk away, her smile holds me in place.

It’s not the kind of smile that promises anything close to what the bartender offered, nor is it teasing and daring like the half-dozen cheerleaders Becca introduced me to flashed. It simply is, fragile like the first snowflakes that fall in winter, and shy like a young woman at her first dance, hoping no one notices she’s not dressed like the rest.

I like what she’s wearing. She looks nice to look nice, not to impress or show off. And someone as pretty as her, well, she doesn’t need to be so shy.

Her lips are glazed in a soft pink like her dress, not overly done, just enough to give them a shine and glisten her light eyes. “Thank you,” she says, quietly. “For helping me out.”

“You’re welcome.”

I take a step in the direction of the bar, eyeing my beer like it’s waiting for me to return. But the step feels unusually heavy and I think my friend the beer can wait.

I turn slowly and offer this little thing with the pretty eyes and the soft smile my hand. It shouldn’t seem like such a big deal or much of an effort, but it’s a little of each. Maybe for both of us. “I’m Landon.”

She takes my hand. I watch it as it disappears within my grasp.

“Hi, Landon,” she replies quietly. “I’m Luci.”

What happens when the rules and the heart conflict? In Mary Billiter’s witty novel of rule breaking and delectable romance, a red-hot suit and a beautiful computer geek are linked by heartbreaking loss and a passion certain to set fire to your pages.

From parking space to cyberspace, Waterfront Point hotel valet Carmen Gonzalez uncovers computer espionage at her own workplace. The independent, computer-whiz Carmen decides that the best way to fight the system is to hack it.
But when Hank Hughes arrives from the Oregon Coast to the Pacific Coast to take care of family business and avenge an injustice, Carmen’s “act first, think later” approach is called into question. Carmen soon realizes you can’t follow the rules and follow your heart, so one has to be broken.

Ohhhhhhh. Damn.
Bryce ran and grabbed the suitcase I’d dropped. “I’ll take care of the bags.”
I barely nodded.
Hank stepped toward me. “I was hoping to run into you today.”
I stared into the greenish-brown eyes that swirled together like his brother’s, but instead of spinning me for a loop, they bored into my heart. Hard.
I heard Hank, but I couldn’t respond. I’m falling for a giant.
He gently touched my shoulder with a massive hand. “You okay?”
“No one’s ever done that.” Suddenly I felt like a young girl. I wrapped my arms around him—or what I could of his waist. “You’re my hero.”
He tipped my chin toward him, looked longingly into my eyes, lowered his head, and softly kissed me. His lips melded into mine, his heart beat against me, and my body responded, pressing into him with a mixture of tenderness and desire that had no beginning and no end.
Nothing like hearing my surname bellowed across the front drive to completely kill a romantic moment. Time of death, 12:35 p.m.
I pulled away from Hank, but not before staring into his eyes. “I don’t want you to vanish again.” I finally let my heart and not my head speak. “I don’t want you to leave.”
A devil-may-care grin crossed his face. “Now, who said anything about goodbye?”

When Skye Harris shows up on the Devil’s Playground’s doorstep asking the Brotherhood for help with a gang taking over her hometown, it’s time for Finn Storm to step up. The bikers might be tough but he’s tougher – and armed with Brotherhood tech and a warrior’s heart he’s going to get the job done, no matter what or who stands in his way.

The one weak spot in his plan is in his heart––Skye gets under his skin like no other woman has and she’s not going to let him take all the danger on his shoulders alone. But when she’s caught in the crossfire Finn has to decide whether to follow his heart or his carefully crafted plan to not only clean up the town but heal his soul.

EXCERPTS: HARD RUN by Sheryl Nantus

Her shoulders ached, and her feet were sore, but for the first time in days, she hadn’t been worrying about Robby non-stop. Finn’s suggestion that she go back to work had been spot on, the distraction a welcome change from sitting in the hospital.

April stuck her head in as Skye started on the second half of the over-stuffed sandwich. The senior waitress had been there for years and had taught her the tricks of the trade.

“Got a new customer on the far-right table. Just came in.”

Skye put her hand to her mouth as she swallowed. “I’m on break. Can you cover?”

“I would, but he asked for you by name. Told him you weren’t available, and he said whenever you were ready, he’d be. Good looking man. You been holding out on me?” The older woman laughed and turned away before Skye could say anything.

She finished her sandwich in record time and headed back out to the front.

Finn sat at the corner table, smiling as he scanned the menu.

“What are you doing here?” she whispered as she pulled out her notepad and pen.

“I do need to eat.” He raised one eyebrow. “I guess you already had dinner.”

“What?” She shook her head, trying to wrap her mind around his arrival.

He leaned forward and swiped his thumb over the edge of her mouth. “I said, I guess you’ve already eaten.”

The soft brush on her skin sent a tremor through her body. She gripped the pen so hard she was afraid she’d snap it in half.

Finn sat down again, licking the mayo off his thumb. “Yum. Can I get an order of whatever you just had?”

She forced herself to scowl. “Aren’t you supposed to be out doing some sort of work?”

“I did. And I am.” He placed his cell phone on the table and stroked the screen. “There’s an app for that.” He spun it around for her to see.

Skye looked at the digital display. “What’s that?”

“The gang’s clubhouse. To be precise, the front of it.” Finn let her study it for a moment before tucking the phone away. “It’s a video feed to see if they bring any of their shipments inside their hideout. I doubt it, but we’re watching all the same.”

“How did you do that?” She was half horrified he’d taken such a risk and half thrilled he’d managed to do it.

“Trey has some nice toys, and he lets me use them every once in a while. Me, I’m more of a hands-on man. Not that there’s anything wrong with toys…” He paused, just long enough to set her imagination on fire.

“Now what would you suggest I eat?” He picked up the menu, seemingly oblivious to the tease he’d tossed out. “I’m craving something delicious. Your recommendations?”

She closed her eyes, feeling heat burn her cheeks.

Lisa’s Review (net Galley Copy) –  Book 2 starts with Skye going to the Brotherhood to ask for help in cleaning up the drugs and corruption in her town. Finn goes back to help clean up the problem and run in trouble with the gang. It’s an exciting book filled with lots of action and a blooming relationship with Skye and Finn. Sky has been hurt but Finn may be the man that can make her believe in forever.   Lisa
